Seeking to make connections with their local environment and engaging tamariki and whānau with nature in a place they would likely visit, Marton Junction Community Preschool talked to Rangitīkei District Council to enquire about planting trees in the local Tutaenui Reservoir. A planting day was planned with 30 tamariki, parents and kaiako to attend. They learnt about the history of the reservoir which used to be all forestry but is now planted in native trees. They helped with a plan for the best locations for planting and each child was able to plant a tree with their parent/carer. This has created a sense of ownership, supporting children to feel empowered of the small changes they can make to protect and nourish the natural world around them. Now when whānau and tamariki head to the reservoir they will be able to check on the progress of their tree and their connection to nature strengthening their whanaungatanga with the whenua
